Where’s the Beef and how do we trace it?

A recent beef recall reported in the USA TODAY on January 20th indicated that 864,000 pounds of beef have been recalled by a Southern California based meat packing company because it might contain e.coli. The good news is that this occurrence was caught during a food safety inspection. This means that sometimes the systems we have in place work. So kudos’s to those that are doing their jobs on behalf of public interest.

What the above situation does not suggest is the problem associated with recalls and the role that traceability in the supply chain plays. Although there has been a lot of work done over the last couple of years, the accepted standard in traceability continues to be one forward one back. That means we require knowing where the meat packing company got their meat from and who they sold it to. In the USA TODAY article it suggested that  the meat was distributed to distribution centers, restaurants and hotels in California for a 3 month period in 2008 and a 10 day period during 2010. The question this begs is where did those organizations distribute the product to and can they recall it if the product even still exists. The act of a recall can be both good and bad. Hopefully it is good for the consumer. It is however never good for the distributor since they already paid for the product. It may however improve their reputation with their customers as a quality company.

What this short article suggests is that safety inspections need to be carried out on schedule and resulting recalls have to be executed quickly to all destination points in the supply chain. This clearly requires better than one forward one back accountability and is what all procurement solution providers should be striving for with their data sources.

Creating a sustainable e-procurement or reverse auction program is based on more than just savings.

Primary success in e-procurement programs such as reverse auctions of which there are many types is in many cases measured by cost reductions. That?s because within a budget period they drop directly to a company?s bottom line plus or minus some switching costs. On more than one occasion I have heard; ?did we hit a home run?? Less emphasis seems to be placed on cost avoidance in an up market and creating a sustainable process. This often results in less spend be assigned to these very effective tools then should be.

In order to ensure that results are sustainable; the strategies for all targeted e-procurement categories require consistent deployment across all departments throughout the host company. This is accomplished by utilizing a well planned repeatable process for category selection and discovery, supplier selection, and a solid strategy that is well understood by all buyers and category managers for negotiation and the award of business process.

Supplier selection and management is a critical stage that requires the understanding and participation of all sourcing professionals within an organization. One small mistake by anyone within the procurement or supply chain organization could negatively impact the potential results of an e-procurement event. Historical long term relationships that drive behind the scene comments like; ?don?t worry we?ll be fine? to a long term supplier may drive inappropriate bid behavior and lack of ongoing credibility with your program. Not to mention the potential legal implications.

What is Green-e? Green-e is the nation’s leading independent consumer protection program for the sale of renewable energy and greenhouse gas reductions in the retail market. Green-e offers certification and verification of renewable energy and greenhouse gas mitigation products. It is a program of the Center for Resource Solutions.
Green-e Energy certifies renewable energy products sold to residential, commercial, industrial and wholesale customers. Certification services are available to all companies selling renewable energy. The process to get a renewable energy product certified varies depending on the type of product seeking certification, based on the following two categories of companies offering renewable energy products.

Who’s managing your suppliers?

Supply base management is the next major addition to strategic sourcing suites. All vendors do not offer this functionality today; in fact some have trouble describing what it is. Although elements of this functionality exist within a variety of surround type service offerings, no one vendor offers complete functionality in this area today. A significant reason for this is the suppliers concern with the thought of being managed in the first place. Additionally, retailers, suppliers nor e-procurement solution providers have agreed as to what the correct Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) should be. As these tools are developed, the most successful supply base management tools will be those that can manage the largest supplier database to the continual benefit of both retailers and suppliers that participate in their events. In a best case scenario, high quality suppliers will get invited to more events, earn incremental business and save retailers both money and time on a continuous basis while also supporting other retail areas of interest such as safety and green initiatives.

This author believes that the most probable result of this process will be a set of automated robust supplier scorecards that monitor and report on supplier performance versus a range of KPI’S that are applied against well known quality guidelines such as Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma etc. resulting in continuous improvement in e-procurement events and growth in the amount of spend under management by retailers.

Are you watching the commodity markets?

A customer asked me the other day what indexes we followed in our sourcing practices. Although this is a very broad question that could be answered any number of ways such as what product are you speaking about, it is in fact a very good question. Let me give you an example.

Let?s suppose you are planning your strategy to buy egg products such as whole eggs or liquid eggs or egg mixes. The first question you need to resolve is what makes up the largest cost in the egg farming process? To provide a short answer, it is feed. The follow up question to this should be what type of grain makes up the feed? Again a short answer is corn. Resultantly these two questions should lead to the conclusion that keeping track of grain market futures is probably the best bet for locking in your pricing strategy depending on the length of your contract. As an example, with this information you might insert escalator / deescalator language in your contract based on the market price of grain at the time you negotiated your pricing.

The next step is determining where you can find this type of information. At SafeSourcing we use the CME Group which includes the Chicago Board of Trade. For the egg market there is also another tool available that can also be useful which looks at the average weekly price of egg products by region of the country. Using the two together is normally your best bet to build a solid strategy.

According to a number of rating services including Alexa and Google Analytics our website has had visitors from thirty seven (37) countries. Our reach which is a percentage measure of global internet users has grown 130%. Our traffic rank has increased 168% and our page views have increased 150%.

This growth places us amongst the top websites in the procurement space. Spend Matters and Sourcing Innovation continue to be the ranking leaders in our space. Both are required daily reading for this author.

We are very proud of our growth as it indicates that SafeSourcing is providing valuable content to regular visitors as well as registered members.
