Grocery Bills on the Rise

Friday, June 19th, 2020

Today’s blog is by Gayl Southard, Administrative Lead at SafeSourcing.

The Coronavirus has led to the fastest rise in food prices in more than four decades. Supermarkets are restoring promotions and value food packs are being designed by food makers. Because of the increased costs for labor and transportation, it is likely higher prices will remain the norm for a while. Companies are buying equipment to keep customers safe and configuring the store layout to keep customers socially distanced. All of these measures result in more trickle down costs to the consumer. Prices rose 2.6% in April from a month earlier, according to the Labor Department, the biggest monthly increase since 1974.

“Mondelez International Inc. said it is considering smaller packages of some products like it’s Oreos and other snacks that cost less overall. Campbell Soup Co. said it might add more family-size packs that will cost less per ounce.”1

It is expected that food, as a percentage of disposable income, will rise this year for the first time in decades. Many people are still out of work, or their hours have been cut, lowering their monthly income. The jump of meat and poultry has propelled the increase in food cost. The pandemic has disrupted food plants because of shutdowns. Meat prices rose 15% the end of May from a year prior. Some consumers have switched to generic brands and discount stores in order to save money. Some people are opting to cut back on meat, or are going meatless.

Getting Back

Thursday, May 21st, 2020

Today’s blog is by Margaret Stewart, Director of HR and Administration at SafeSourcing Inc.

Many places and businesses are beginning to reopen after closures from the Covid-19 pandemic. From retailers and salons, to gyms and daycares, many people are planning on getting back, but what does that really mean? The concern over the virus is still present, so in order to even open doors, numerous precautions must be taken.

First, employees must be given masks. There has and still is a shortage of masks that effectively protect people from the virus. There must be enough masks for every employee, which means any business will need to have a supply already. Right now, you can use your procurement partner for help in sourcing the masks you will need to get your business on its way to reopening.

Next, the places where employees are working must be cleaned, thoroughly and often. This means common areas must be disinfected. This likely means a hefty supply of sanitizer and cleaners will be needed and must be available before reopening. Again, your procurement partner can help you source the supplies you need and help find the right supplier for your needs.

Finally, getting back to work will require social distancing. For many, this is especially difficult. For example, restaurants will need to move tables apart, often 6 feet or more, which can reduce the number of tables that can fit in a dining area. This can reduce the number of people seated at a time and can greatly reduce the amount of business. Other businesses will have to make other adjustments, like separating cubicles, reorganizing stores to make aisles wider, and reducing the number of employees in the business at one time. Some businesses may bypass the social distancing altogether and have their employees continue working from home indefinitely.

While it may take some preparation and getting used to, businesses will reopen and things will get back to regular routines. This is where you may rely on others to get through this. A procurement partner, like SafeSourcing, can help your organization find the suppliers of supplies you will need to get things back up and running. They are ready to help and have the experience you might need during difficult times like this.

Optimism and Procurement

Friday, April 17th, 2020

Today’s blog is by Margaret Stewart, Director of HR and Administration at SafeSourcing.

With so much going on right now, many people are scared or concerned with what will happen and what things will be like when this is all over. While we may not yet know what, if anything will change, there are some areas that have already been affected. In fact, there is at least one particular area that has actually improved.

Many years ago, it wasn’t uncommon for a family to only own one car or even no cars. Now, that has changed a lot. Many Americans each have their own car and it has been a necessity for people to get where they need to, whether it is work, school, or shopping. With the current virus situation people are no longer driving to work as often and most schools are closed. This has greatly reduced the number of vehicles on the road.

There are a few silver linings here. With fewer people driving, there have been fewer accidents. This means there are less people being injured or dying in vehicle accidents. Because there are fewer accidents, insurance companies haven’t had to pay out as much money for repairs and medical expenses. In fact, there have been several car insurance companies that have begun refunding premiums because they have paid out so much less.

With fewer drivers on the road, another silver lining is less traffic and this can greatly help truck drivers and other aspects of logistics. Fewer cars mean more room for truck drivers, fewer distractions, and again, fewer accidents that can cause delays. This can mean transportation of goods is quicker and more efficient.

Another silver lining is a decrease in pollution. With fewer cars, there are fewer emissions from exhaust. In addition, truck drivers’ ability to drive with fewer delays, means they are also emitting less. Even more than the reduction of exhaust fumes, with fewer vehicles, there is fast less gas and diesel consumption. This means production can slow down, which can additionally help reduce pollution.

While we wait to get through this and for life to return to normal, we can know that there have been some silver linings to this dark cloud of a virus.

The e-procurement value chain consists of indent management, e-Informing, e-Tendering, e-Auctioning, vendor management, catalogue management, Purchase Order Integration, Order Status, Ship Notice, e-invoicing, e-payment, and contract management. Indent management is the workflow involved in the preparation of tenders. This part of the value chain is optional, with individual procuring departments defining their indenting process. In works procurement, administrative approval and technical sanction are obtained in electronic format. In goods procurement, indent generation activity is done online.

2019 SafeSourcing Top 10 List

Thursday, January 2nd, 2020

Todays post is from Dave Wenig, Sr. Vice President of Sales and Services at SafeSourcing Inc.

It’s the end of the year and that means many of your favorite entertainment and news sources are publishing their top 10 lists for the year. In that same spirit, I’ve pulled together a list of my Top 10 SafeSourcing moments in 2019. Let’s get right into the top 10.

10. SafeSourceIt™ Event View now features a graph view. Using this view, SafeSourcing customers have a powerful way to monitor their RFQ Events in real time at a high level that delivers valuable insights.

9. Bottled Water RFQ Events. SafeSourcing customers hosted many RFQ Events for bottled water savings between 16% and 23%. This represents an increase in category savings versus 2018.

8. Waste Removal continues its streak. Waste Removal has historically been a wildly successful category for SafeSourcing customer and that held true in 2019 with the average savings holding steady at about 35%.

7. Reruns won big. SafeSourcing customers that held rerun RFQs at the end of their contract terms beat expectations significantly. Typical expectations for rerun RFQs is about 50% of the savings from the initial RFQ Event.

6. Snow Removal and Landscaping. 2019 was a big year for customers hosting Snow Removal and Landscaping RFQ Events. Often overlooked as a competitive category, SafeSourcing’s customers saw between 16% and 42% savings. Wow.

5. Mobile Phones and Broadband were big. We noticed a huge increase in customers eager to explore their options for mobile service plans and broadband. Good for them, because each of them was very successful.

4. Flyer Distribution (Retailers). Nearly all of our larger retail customers throughout North America sourced their flyer distribution and uncovered savings. In some markets, customers often consider this impossible to source competitively and see it as a monopoly. We disagree and so do our customers who benefited from our assistance.

3. Incumbent margins. 2019 was a year full of focus on incumbent margins. We noticed a fantastic trend where incumbent vendors were awarded business after RFQs at a higher rate than is expected. This is a win for the incumbent who gets to keep their business at rates more in line with the market, and a win for the customer who gets the best pricing available and does not have to go through the process of changing vendors.

2. SafeSourcing in the Top 10. SafeSourcing was recognized as one of the world’s top auction application companies by CIO magazine. Link here.

1. Our customers and partners. We’re truly lucky to have some of the best customers and partners that any business could ask for. 2019 has been a fantastic year of working closely together with all of you. We’ve enjoyed the time spend and our visits and it has been our pleasure to work with you. If you’ve worked with us on a category named on this list, I’m sure you would agree on its inclusion. I look forward to working with all of our current customers and partners and can’t wait to make new connections in 2020. Thank you for an excellent 2019 and see you in 2020.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my picks for the Top 10 list. I’d be interested to hear what I missed and whether you agree with my ranking.

Want real cost controls? Start getting strategic about procurement.

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019

Today’s post is by Dave Wenig, Vice President of Sales and Services at SafeSourcing, Inc.

Most will agree that reducing and controlling costs within an organization is important. Certainly, all of SafeSourcing’s customers leverage our services to generate savings and they all do that fairly well. However, just like in many things, the results will vary.

Success in cost control is a spectrum. On the one side, results are good, but may be limited. On the opposite end, the results are spectacular and widespread. As would be expected, SafeSourcing has customers across the entire spectrum. We’re always coaching and pushing our customers to move toward the spectacular savings end of the spectrum.

So, if we identify the spectrum as ranging from “good” to “spectacular,” then what is it that determined where on that scale a customer will fit? One answer is how their organization has approached sourcing with eProcurement. Customers that find good results, meaning they will source some spend and find some savings are typically utilizing eProcurement as a tactical tool. They select an individual category and focus on that alone to find savings. Any use of eProcurement is better than none and their results will be good for that category. This customer will then start to consider what they would like to source next. Again, this approach will deliver good results. We’re always going to try to push this type of customer to do even better and achieve more.

Customers that get closer to spectacular results will invariably have a very strategic approach to sourcing and their approach to eProcurement. As a strategic sourcing company, SafeSourcing is very deeply engaged with these customers to help make sure their results are meeting their objectives. How strategically an organization manages their sourcing will directly correlate to how close to spectacular their results will be. SafeSourcing has a full set of procure to pay solutions and our customers who achieve spectacular results don’t just run RFPs and RFQs. These customers leverage our SafeSpendAnalysis™ to build a roadmap, they utilize our SafeSourceIt™ suite of eRFQx tools to negotiate pricing, they continue that control with our SafeContract™, SafeCatalog™, and SafePO™ tools and more. Customers on this end of the spectrum see results that truly have an impact on the bottom line. The level of cost control available to customers that take this strategic approach, or even part of it, will always be greater than what customers will get with a tactical approach.

Again, with a spectrum ranging from good to spectacular, the point is that participating in eProcurement either with a tactical approach or a strategic approach is better than not using eProcurement. The question an organization needs to consider is; do they want to have good results, or do they want spectacular results? We can’t answer that, but we’ll always try to push them to do more and better.

Are you ready for your next power outage?

Friday, September 20th, 2019

Today’s post is by Troy Lowe; Vice President of Development at SafeSourcing.

I was looking at a website that I frequently browse for deals the other day when I came across something that I have never seen before. It was a set of rechargeable emergency LED light bulbs. These LED bulbs work like regular light bulbs. The difference is that they contain a battery backup system that will provide light in the event of a power outage. You just plug the bulbs into a standard fixture and the bulbs will charge when the light is turned on. When the power goes out the bulb will run off of the internal battery as long as the fixture is in the on position. Some of the bulbs come with an accessory that you can screw the light bulb into and switch it on an off without having to use a lamp. This will allow you to move the light bulb from room to room in case of a power outage. Just like standard LED bulbs, they come in different lumens (brightness) to suit the needs of your environment. I purchased a set of four and I will be placing them in areas throughout the house in which lighting at night would be necessary for safely navigating. This includes the basement since this is the darkest part of the house and one of the places you need to go during tornado warnings. See below for other advantages of using rechargeable LED bulbs.

  • 4-5 Hour Emergency Lighting
  • Energy Efficient
  • Long Life
  • Environmentally Friendly/No Toxic Elements
  • No Warm Up Time/Instant On
  • Cold Temperature Operation
  • Durability
  • Safety – No Heat Released
  • Dimming Capabilities

If you are looking to purchase new lighting and would like help researching available options, feel free to contact SafeSourcing.   We can gather all the necessary information for you and help you decide which one meets your needs. Honey

Honey

Today’s post is by Gayl Southard, Administrative Consultant at SafeSourcing, Inc.

There has been a growing concern in the decrease number of honey bees due to pesticides killing them and parasites that get into the hives.

The global consumption of honey is due to exceed 2.8 million tons by 2024. This is largely driven by the growing consumer consumption preference of natural and healthy alternatives to artificial sweeteners. The health benefits of honey range from home remedies such as weight reduction, improved digestion, prebiotic support, acne cure, and a natural exfoliator. China is the largest producer and consumer of honey worldwide.

A few interesting bee facts:

  • Honey bees have pockets in their legs to store pollen called corbiculae. By the end of the day these filled pockets will result in a weight increase of 15%.
  • When it comes time for an older queen bee to be replaced, the worker bees know it and they build new queen cells in the hive. They load the new cells with healthy pupae and flood the cells with royal jelly. They “ball” the queen which means they cluster around her causing her body temperature to rise and she dies. There is only one queen bee per hive. If two are produced, they fight until there is only one survivor.
  • Bees are cold blooded. When the temperature drops below 50 degrees, they can’t fly. Honey bees do not sleep. They remain motionless at night to conserve energy for the next day.
  • The drones’ job is to mate with the queen; however not with the queen in their hive. They travel to other hives. After they mate, they die. They represent 15% of the hive. When temperatures drop in the fall, the drones are kicked out.
  • “Bearding” refers to a form of bees that hang out of the hive (or a cluster of bees) that allow the hive temperature to regulate when internal temperatures get too high.

We look forward to and appreciate your comments. For more information please contact a SafeSourcing Customer Services Representative.

What’s the beef (alternative)

Tuesday, June 25th, 2019

Today’s Post is by Eli Razov, Senior Account Manager at SafeSourcing Inc.

A meat analogue, also called a meat alternative, meat substitute, mock meat, faux meat, imitation meat, vegetarian meat, or vegan meat, approximates certain aesthetic qualities (e.g. texture, flavor, appearance) or chemical characteristics of specific types of meat. Generally, meat analogue means a food made from vegetarian ingredients, and sometimes without animal products such as dairy. Many analogues are soy-based (e.g. tofu, tempeh) or gluten-based, but now may also be pea protein-based. The market for meat analogues includes vegetarians, vegans, non-vegetarians seeking to reduce their meat consumption, and people following religious dietary laws.

A meat analogue looks and tastes like meat from an animal. These products use proteins from plants with fat, coloring and flavoring to replicate poultry, beef or seafood. In some cases these products are used as fillers in meat. There are many companies that manufacture and sell different meat analogue products from patties and ground to breakfast meats and sausages. With growing vegan and vegetarian diet trends more restaurants are beginning to offer meat analogue menu items. That being said more foodservice companies are beginning to explore and offer more product lines offering vegan and vegetarian options. Many of these products claim to taste exactly like their meat counterparts. These products can be found in almost every grocery store and are beginning to pop up in convenience store roller grills nationwide.

Here at SafeSourcing we have a growing database of meat analogue manufacturers and distributors. We work directly with these vendors to help our clients save on these products. With the growing popularity in meat analogue products there is a chance you could be seeing them on your shelves if you haven’t already. Contact SafeSourcing and let us help you save on your meat analogue costs today!

Netflix’s New Audio Platform

Friday, May 17th, 2019

Today’s post is by Troy Lowe; Vice President of Development at SafeSourcing.

As a tech enthusiast I get excited when I hear technology news. I recently purchased a surround sound system for my family room that supports Dolby Atmos. For those of you who do not know what Dolby Atmos is, it’s basically an expansion of Dolby Digital 5.1 and 7.1 to include speakers that reside above which adds height to the sound. This technology allows for the sound to be played directly to certain speakers throughout the room. So, for example, when there is a scene of a plane flying overhead and to the left, the sound will start from behind you, then move overhead and then move to the left and fade away. When a scene contains rain, it will sound like the rain is coming from directly above. The reason I am bringing this up is because Netflix just announced earlier this month that they developed and launched high-quality audio. With this new technology they are able to improve the sound quality to “studio quality” audio that sounds closer to what the creators hear within the studio. This results in higher quality audio to all of their content without needing more bandwidth or buffering. If you are looking forward to utilizing this new platform you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • A Netflix Premium plan is required for the Dolby Atmos
  • Compatible Television or device such as Amazon Fire TV Cube
  • Sound System that supports 5.1/Dolby Atmos
  • Watch movies or shows with 5.1 or Dolby Atmnos support
  • Internet connection that supports 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4k/HDR

If you are interested in upgrading any of your electronic devices, feel free to contact SafeSourcing. We can gather all the necessary information for you and help you decide which one meets your needs.

If you would like more information on how SafeSourcing can help you, please contact a SafeSourcing Customer Service representative.  We have an entire team ready to assist you today.
