Are you currently using the most effective cell phone carrier?

Today’s post is by Troy Lowe; Director of Development at SafeSourcing.

With the release of the new iPhone 6, you may be considering a new cell phone or carrier.  Choosing a new carrier can be a tough decision with all of the carriers available and all of the different packages that they offer.  Many carriers know that for a business to switch phone carriers it can be a strenuous task, therefore they may offer incentives to do so.

the right plan that is cost effective and delivers the type of service that you need may not be as easy as one would think.  Make sure to review the plans in depth and read the fine print.  Some plans state that they can have up to a maximum number of lines for a low monthly cost but only some of the lines maybe used for Smart Phones the remainder of the lines are for Basic Phones only.  The pricing for the plan may also only be for the first year and additional costs may be added for the remainder of the contract.

When making this decision it is not just all about the cost.  Here are a few other factors that you may want to consider.

•  Which phone(s) meets the needs of your organization?
•  How is the carrier’s coverage in your area(s)?
•  Which data package will I need?
•  Are the data speeds sufficient?
•  Do they have a plan to meet you current and future needs?
•  Will the customer service meet your employee’s needs?

At SafeSourcing, we can gather all the necessary information for your company and help you decide what carrier would be a good fit for your needs.  If you would like more information on how SafeSourcing can help your business, please contact a SafeSourcing Customer Service representative.  We have an entire team ready to assist you today.

What will business be like in 100 years?

September 11th, 2014

Often, the best way to stay on top of the business trend is to know where it is heading.

Today’s blog is by Margaret Stewart, Executive Assistant at SafeSourcing.

Often, the best way to stay on top of the business trend is to know where it is heading. Any predictions are pure speculation; however, there are ways to make educated guesses based on current information.

First, ask the right questions. Often times, all you need are the right questions to point you to the best answer. Yes and No questions fill this exact purpose. They are often the simplest to answer and can guide you to where you should be going.

For example, do you think technology will increase in the future? Do you think consumers want more technology? Would better technology help your business? If you answered yes to these, then you likely have a better direction of where to take your business.

Next, do your homework. So now that you have an idea of what the future might bring, now is the time for specifics. In order to know what the specifics are, you need to do your research. For the case above, you may want to start researching what technology is currently available. Then you can research what areas are being explored. This can provide an even more pointed direction for the future.

Finally, look for the critics. The most knowledgeable person knows the ups and downs to any changes. Again for the case above, see what people do not like about technology. See what roadblocks are present for certain aspirations. Look at what some of the technology could bring.

By focusing on these three steps, you can better prepare yourself and your business for what may come and may even get a jumpstart ahead of your competitors.

What elements make up the Total Cost of Ownership in the Material Handling Equipment Category?

September 10th, 2014

SafeSourcing has recently seen double digit savings in this category.

Today’s Blog is by Ryan Melowic Director of Special Projects at SafeSourcing.

Today I will be reviewing the items required in constructing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for the Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Category.

Experience teaches us that in the MHE category, there are five major items that require review in order to understand the TCO for the MHE category.  Understanding these items in detail, how they interact and what part they play in the TCO for MHE provides key stakeholders and other decision makers the information needed to make strategic award of business decisions.   The five major items that make up the TCO in MHE are as follows.

  1. Purchase Price
  2. Maintenance
  3. Labor
  4. Electricity
  5. Interest

Over the life of your company’s spend for MHE equipment; your company can expect to see a breakdown in these items weighted as follows. Labor is the largest piece of the spend with actual purchase price being second and maintenance third and typically a few points below the purchase price. Electricity is the fourth component of TCO followed by interest which generally represents three to four percentage points.

Understanding these components of your total price will provide you the opportunity to pull the various levers required in order to maximize price control of your MHE spend.  SafeSourcing has extensive experience in this category and knows what these levers are and how to manipulate them.

SafeSourcing has recently seen double digit savings in this category.

You should always be thinking outside of the box when sourcing every category you manage!

This applies even if those boxes are now also made of straw.

Straw is now a new sustainable option for supermarket and food retail packaging in Europe.

Today’s Blog is by Ryan Melowic, Director of Special Projects at SafeSourcing.

Let’s take a look and some of the new packaging innovations and their impact on the supermarket and food retail packaging industry in Europe.

The UK company, ValueForm, has developed 100% straw pizza discs and plans to have them on supermarket shelves sometime before the end of this year. In efforts to move away from paper and plastic, ValueForm has developed this sustainable, but cost competitive product.

Typically, environmentally friendly packaging options are more expensive to produce and therefore come with a higher price point for supermarkets and food retail packagers. ValueForm’s products remain competitive in price and, in most cases, are less expensive than the plastic or paper products they would replace.

ValueForm can deliver their products anywhere in the world. They have also introduced a technology transfer license that reuses the infrastructure of existing paper pulp molders to convert them to using straw. This will allow new manufactures to improve the technology. The results could be new products and materials being produced worldwide.

This type of forward thinking will reduce our world’s dependencies on other commodities with more sustainable products. It will also reduce costs for supermarket and food retail packaging by creating a more competitive market for packaging products.  Currently, ValueForm’s clients range widely in size and in the products they purchase.  Products range from disposable medical products to supermarket and food retailer packaging.

Customer Focused: Is It Slipping Away?

September 3rd, 2014

With changes in organizations and technology, customer focused goals and objectives have become unrealistic.

Today’s post is by Shelly Hayre; Project Manager at SafeSourcing.

With changes in organizations and technology, customer focused goals and objectives have become unrealistic. But, why? Research shows customer focused companies outperform their competitors in profitability, innovation, and customer satisfaction. It seems like a no-brainer that companies would remain customer focused, but it is slipping away from companies.

Many changes in business contribute to this challenge to remain customer focused.

1.  Processes and protocols- Organizations focus on protocols and process with lacking empathy for customers’ needs. Customer service departments are unaware of customers’ needs.
2.  Information silos- This limits customer interactions through the organization and do not have clear image of big picture.
3.  Technology- Technology is saving organizations labor, but is it hurting their customer focus? The empathy, I discussed earlier, does not come from robots or voice-prompts.

How do you get customer focused AGAIN?

1.  Define “customer focus” for your organization- What does being customer focused mean in your organization? Make sure everyone understand this and the level of expectations.
2.  Get everyone’s buy in- If only directors and sales department give input to initiative and not every level of service is on the same page, execution will fall through. This will only make things worse for the customer.
3.  Help employees connect- it is very easy for employees to become disconnected with customers. Provide the training and skills to handling customer concerns and provide empathy when needed.
4.  Add customer to the agenda- If your organization is having meetings without discussing customers, how can you be customer focused? Customer discussion should be included in meetings.

SafeSourcing has a team that is trained and provides the skills to be customer focused. We care about your needs and want to help you and your organization. It does not stop there, though. We understand your suppliers are very important too. We treat your suppliers like they are our customers.

At SafeSourcing, we will take every step to exceed all parties’ customer service expectations.

This unfortunately happens much too often in procurement!

September 2nd, 2014

So, you get your suppliers, users, procurement knowledge workers and financial experts together in order to provide input for a sourcing event.

Now you have to be very careful and clear what you are asking for.

You hoped to get a product based on your specification that looked something like this.

Unfortunately you ended up with a product that looks exactly like this, and also spits at you to boot.

Remember that “A camel is a horse created by committee” so be careful what you ask for because that is not necessarily what you’ll get .

If you want really clean well thought out specifications and terms and conditions, please contact a SafeSourcing customers services representative.

Thanks.

Tools Your IT Team Needs!

August 29th, 2014

Are you currently using multiple applications to handle your development and support needs?

Today’s post is by Troy Lowe, Director of Development at SafeSourcing.

Cloud based solutions are great because they allow you to organize all of your projects in one place.  There is no need to invest in expensive hardware or software and all updates are performed in the cloud, freeing up your employees to focus on what’s important within your organization. Once your account is setup, the infrastructure is in place to start working within minutes.

All of your data and source code are stored in the cloud, which makes it accessible anytime, anywhere.  This makes it flexible for your employees to work no matter where they are located.

Security is a big issue within organizations and cloud based solutions. These solutions have security measures to help protect your code and data.  In some cases, all communication between your computer and the service takes place over an encrypted HTTPS connection.

Things to keep in mind when you pick your solution:

  • How much does the solution cost?
  • How many users can access the solution?
  • How much are additional licenses?
  • How much storage is available?
  • Are there any hidden fees?

If you would like more information on how SafeSourcing can help your business get started with a cloud offering, please contact a SafeSourcing Customer Service representative.  We have an entire team ready to assist you today.

The Procurement Specialist vs. The Saleswoman

August 27th, 2014

Sometimes companies only want to show you face value of the products and not necessarily every single dynamic aspect.

Today’s post is by Alyson Usserman  an Account Manager at Safesourcing

I have been SUV shopping for close to three months. I have researched, test driven, looked at, researched again, and I am still not ready to buy quite yet. There are so many lingering questions that need to be answered before I sign a contract for x amount of years.

This past week I test drove two SUVs that were virtually the same on the outside. However, the inside was extremely different. SUV A had Bluetooth, and heated seats; however, SUV A was an automatic. SUV B was not equipped with Bluetooth or a back-up camera, it had a standard black interior, but the most intriguing part about SUV B was the fact that it was a 6-speed Manual Transmission.

Most people do not know how to drive a manual transmission, which is fine, however I prefer the manual over the automatic especially in the awful Ohio winter. I can control the manual completely, how fast it’s going, which gear it is in on the ice.

I already knew I wanted the manual over the automatic any day. But then questions started coming up more frequently. Will this SUV be a good long term investment? Will my 17 month old son be safe? Will he have enough leg room in 10 years? Can I fit four teenage boys in it and comfortably? Can two car seats fit safely, what about three? The car saleswoman I was speaking to and expressing concern to, attempted to convince me that that SUV was the one I had been searching for! Of course she did, that is her job to sell cars whether she believes it will be a good fit or not. Without pre-existing knowledge of the industry, the top brands, and potential issues, I may have left with SUV A instead of the one I actually wanted.

Sometimes well-meaning sales consultants think that their product is the best out there. Some of them are right, and some of them are wrong. At SafeSourcing we dig beyond face value for our customers, we not only try to find the best price possible, but the best product for that price as well.

Let SafeSourcing help you find the products that your company needs. We have an entire customer service team that can help with your procurement needs.

The Importance of Subject Matter Experts

August 20th, 2014

A vital contributor to any successful procurement project

Today’s post is by Michael Figueroa, Account Manager at SafeSourcing

Reaching out to vendors to obtain quotes or information is only as effective as the quality of specifications and requirements communicated. Variables such as size, quantity, color, material, mixture, function, distribution, configuration, integration, certification and compliance, or even unknown variables, can often times be readily identified by the individual with deep understanding of the product or service. Subject matter experts (SME) are often time the only link a procurement manager has within their organization to the processes that require the purchase.

Having the wrong party involved
Getting buy-in from an internal resource who isn’t well-informed about how the product/service is to be utilized can undermine the value of a request for quote. Without the right understanding, a vendor can misinterpret specifications that leave too much open to interpretation. A SME with good insight can inform the process to keep the requirements in line with expectations.

Vendor referrals
Often times a SME will already have some preferred vendors in mind, and their referrals can be a great starting point to finding a full complement of vendors that can meet your needs. Furthermore, previously known vendors often work in the specialization that your SME operates within, and may be familiar enough with the industry to forge a smooth transaction.

Confirm what you know
Make sure to check what you learn from the SME with the information you have on previously purchased products, because a misunderstanding can be costly. Also, if you are bringing a new vendor to the table the SME may not always be on board with the change, even if it needs to happen. Make sure there are no conflicts of interest steering the project in the wrong direction.

What We Can Learn From Our Pets?

August 19th, 2014

Some of the most valuable lessons we learn are the most basic, what are you learning these days?

Today’s post is by Mark Davis; Sr. Vice President and COO at SafeSourcing.

This weekend I had a few incidents with my two dogs that made me stop and think about how some of our most basic behaviors in life and in business can be learned from little things.   It should me how we hang onto things, we learn new tricks and we find out that covered up mistakes almost always get found out.

Not letting go  – The first incident happened when one of my dogs would not let go of his favorite toy.  He had to go outside and he was going to get the toy back but he wouldn’t let go and finally the toy (it was an old one) ripped in half so instead of letting go of the toy and doing what he needed do in which case if he wanted it back he could have had it.  It reminded me of how strongly we hold to processes and relationships, refusing to let go for just a moment and examine the options, doing what we need to do, and then deciding whether we want to keep those things we hold onto.  Not letting go causes tensions and in some cases forces management to look at that process or relationship and ending or changing it so that the option of going back to it isn’t even there.

Learning new tricks – With some time my other dog learned a new trick.  It was not something he ever knew how to do before but when he was able to do it, he got rewarded and we got a dog that was much more pleasant to be around.  New tricks are the way business advance and succeed.  They take time and effort but usually the effort benefits the team or process and the business itself.  Take for instance a process that requires a team to look at historical spend and vendor relationships and attacks a category in a new way that benefits the company and the supplier.  It takes time and it generally doesn’t happen on the first try but in the end it benefits everyone.

Covering up mistakes – A friend of mine had purchased a cinnamon roll that she was planning on having early Sunday morning.  When she woke up her dog was hiding and walking around the house with his tail between his legs.  He had obviously done something wrong and was feeling guilty.  Then she found an empty container behind her couch and realized her dog ate her cinnamon roll.  She was upset, the dog felt bad and then the dog eventually got sick.  This typifies behavior in the business world in so many ways.  Mistakes happen but attempting to cover them up leads to guilt by the offender and prevents the business from being able to reduce the damage or correct the mistake in a timely manner.  Helping to prevent mistakes comes with putting processes in place that help protect your employs from making the mistakes to begin with but that also have checks and balances to ensure mistakes are caught early.  The worst thing you can do is place an unprepared employee in a situation where they are not closely monitored.  It almost always leads to the cover up situation.

For more information on how we can help you develop “new tricks” or work with your procurement departments to development effective sourcing projects, please contact a SafeSourcing Customer Service Representative.  We have an entire customer services team waiting to assist you today.
